Millet is not a single grain but a group of small-seeded annual grasses belonging to the Poaceae family. There is mention of millets in the Indian Sanskrit text Yajurveda’s verses- of foxtail millet (priyangava), proso millet (aanava), and Barnyard millet (shyaamaka).
